SwanValley Dobermanns is also home to Hector di Casa Shirak (Import Austria) CCD. Hector is one of the most highly credentialed Dobermanns to ever have been imported into this country with no less than 6 World Winners, 17 International Conformation Champions, 75 Conformation Champion Titles, 9 IPO III Titles, 22 ZTP Titles and 26 Schutzhund Titles in his immediate 4 generation Pedigree. His pedigree boasts the very best that Europe has to offer, with many of these Dobermanns achieving the most elite levels in all aspects of Dog Sports, that being: Conformation, Obedience, Tracking and Protective work.
At SwanValley Dobermanns we pride ourselves in breeding not only for conformation, working ability and temperament but also for longevity. We do extensive health testing on all of our breeding stock. Our health requirements include:
1. Regular heart ultrasounds that MUST be clear of any signs of heart disease.
2. von Willebrand’s test for bleeding disorders
3. Hip Scores for Hip dysplasia
4. Teeth Certificate for correct dentition
5. Elbow Score for elbow dysplasia
6. Thyroid Functions Tests
7. Liver Function Tests
8. Kidney Function Tests
9. Full eye examination by a Veterinarian Ophthalmologist testing for any hereditary or acquired eye problems.
In addition, we also prefer our breeding stock to be:
1. Conformation Titled/Breed Surveyed
2. Obedience Titled
3. Temperament Titled
We conduct extensive research into the potential breeding stock that we use and where possible use animals that come from parents that have lived more than 10 years and preferably more than 12 years. Please refer to the “Health” section on this website to find out more.
We strongly believe that through honesty in regards to health problems and not using diseased stock we can improve the breed. We therefore freely publish all health test results of our dogs.
Unfortunately, these tests are no guarantee that our puppies will be disease free. However, by doing these tests we reduce the risk that our puppies develop problems and hopefully live a long, happy and healthy life.
Expressions like “what we don’t know can’t hurt us” and “ignorance is bliss” have no place in modern breeding practices, and breeders adopting this approach should be avoided at all costs.
A small saving in purchase price can result in extensive on-going costs, not to mention the emotional drain, if the wrong breeder is chosen. One old expression that can ring true is “you get what you pay for”, however higher prices don’t necessarily mean higher quality either, so do your home work.
At SwanValley Dobermanns we put extensive time and effort into our breeding programme and puppies, and as a result we are highly selective about the people to whom we sell our dogs.
It is important to us that our puppies go to people who will integrate them into their daily lives and make them a part of their family. Please refer to "The Decision" to help you decide if a Dobermann is the right breed for you and your circumstances.
All of our puppies are micro-chipped, tattooed, wormed, vaccinated and are sold with the “SwanValley Dobermanns Training Manual” - a book written by us to give our puppy buyers a step-by-step illustrated guide in the basic training for your puppy. All puppies also come with the “SwanValley Dobermanns Puppy Pack” which includes many useful details including information on vaccination, house training, worming, diet, exercise etc.
We strongly believe that the first 8 weeks of a puppy’s life are crucial to them developing into a well adjusted adult dog. We therefore have a “Puppy Adventure Playground” to help develop motor and sensory skills. All our puppies start lead training and basic obedience from the time they are 4 weeks giving the new owners the best chance of continuing with successful training.
We recommend to all of our buyers to socialise their puppy from an early age, this should include your local vet (many vet clinics run puppy classes), as this will result the dog enjoying visiting to the vet in the future. All puppies should undergo basic obedience training, ideally this will start the day that you take your puppy home. Early obedience training will help to prevent a lot of potential problems that may occur once the dog is older. The SwanValley Dobermanns Training Manual gives new owners all the information they need to achieve this.
At SwanValley Dobermanns we are happy to offer support and guidance to all of our buyers should they need it. We actively compete in the conformation and working arenas and have extensive knowledge in these areas. However, we are also more than happy to provide advice in regards to any general issues such as house training and prevention of problem behaviours such as excessive barking, digging, etc.
We offer one-on-one dog training in obedience, agility, jumping, show training and tracking. We have new agility (compliant with the recently introduced new regulations) and obedience equipment to train to the most elite levels in these sports. We also have a dedicated floodlit training area allowing us to train at night. We cater for people that simply want a well behaved companion through to those striving to campaign their dogs competitively.
Obedience training is also offered by many local dog training clubs, details of the clubs nearest to you can be obtained from your state's Canine Association. Classes usually cater for those that simply want a well behaved pet through to people wishing to trial their dogs competitively in obedience, agility, jumping and tracking.
